Our Attitude on the Journey
Last month I met a very humble and trusting man and from that one encounter it has left me wondering about out attitude as Christians: with God and also with those around us.
The man will remain nameless but he was completely, and utterly blind. It amazed me how happy he was to be guided, how trusting he was to those at his side and how pleasant he was to those he brushed alongside as he walked to and from the car, as we then drove him to the station.
My wife Becki helped him out of the car and there a stranger (an employee of the train station) led him onto the train and to his seat for the rest of his journey home.
I wonder if we were to compare our faith with God, to that of being blind and having someone lead at our side, I wonder what our attitude would be like? Would we boldly hold on to him who stands next to us, trusting that we are on the journey together, that he will alert us and guide us on our way? Or are we less confident in him and therefore put our trust in our own ability: frantically feeling around us trying to identify every obstacle and hurdle, defiantly wanting to progress on our own? Or are we somewhere in between, reminding ourselves of the God who walks with us but as we come across hurdles we falter and try to make our own way before once again remembering of he who is at our side?
Continuing with this image, I wonder what we are like with those around us, as we brush alongside those on our journey?
Do we fervently proclaim our path and about the one who leads us, ignoring those who walk on our way? Or do we shy away from contact and apologise to all whom we meet and hurry forward not wanting to disturb those around us? Or are we once again somewhere in between, letting our trust in our guide show to all alongside us, to be pleasant and open to those that we meet, willing to share our story and the good news of our guide?
As I write this, a Bible verse keeps on coming to mind: taken from Micah 6:8 ‘act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’
I wonder who we shall meet on our journey this week, and what our attitude will be towards them?
